You can always grab garlic powder at your favorite supermarket. Or you can simply produce it from scratch. Making your own garlic powder at home is actually very easy. Once you get the hang of it, you will see that going back to buying its commercially-available counterpart is no longer necessary.

Cooking-wise, you can save plenty of time — you can skip stuff like peeling, chopping and mincing, and still end up with really flavorful dishes. Health-wise, it’s common knowledge that garlic is a pungent herb that offers tons of incredible benefits!
So without further ado, here are the steps on making garlic powder with your own hands:
Peel Fresh Garlic Cloves
Have several garlic bulbs separated into cloves. Afterwards, have them peeled. A quick way to easily peel a garlic clove is by chopping off the tough end at its bottom, right where it attaches itself to the rest. Once it’s off, you can easily remove the skin — even with your own fingers.
You can peel as many garlic cloves as you can. It will all depend on how much garlic powder you want to come up with. The more cloves you peel, the more garlic powder you end up with — and the more dishes you can make savory!
Slice Them Up
In order to turn garlic cloves into powder, you need to have them dried. To hasten the drying process, the peeled garlic cloves should be sliced thinly.
Try to slice up those garlic cloves as thinly as you can — the thinner, the quicker the drying process will be. Also, it will make the pulverization part trouble-free.
Allow Garlic Cloves to Dry
The next step is to give those sliced garlic cloves enough time to dry. Actually, you can choose from 3 different drying processes. Regardless of the process, you will still end up with powdered garlic that can rival its commercially-available counterpart quality-wise. Choose the one that you find more convenient or practicable:
- Using an oven. Preheat your oven to 150°F. Neatly arrange the slices of garlic on a large baking sheet. Stash it in the oven for about 30 minutes or so. When they already look dry, flip over. You know that your garlic slices are ready for pulverization if you can make them crumble with your fingers.
- With the help of a dehydrator. Do you have a dehydrator at home because you love making and snacking on dehydrated fruits? Then you can use such kitchen companion in drying up those slices of garlic.
- Under the sun. This process is the easiest on the pocket because it requires no electricity. However, it will take a while before the slices of garlic are ready to be turned into powder — sometimes up to a couple of days, depending on where you live or the weather condition. Line a large tray with kitchen paper and neatly arrange your slices of garlic on it. Cover those slices of garlic with a mesh to keep insects at bay.
It’s Time to Pulverize
Once the slices of garlic are thoroughly dry, bring out your food processor or coffee grinder. Turn little batches into powder, each time making sure that there are no large pieces remaining.
