Some cramps can be severe and cause extreme pain and may be accompanied by loose bowel movements. Extreme cases of pain or discomfort during menstruation are usually called dysmenorrhea.

Dysmenorrhea can affect almost all women at any point in their reproductive age. And even though dysmenorrhea can be a common occurrence, cases with extreme debilitating pain should consult their gynecologist to determine if their is any underlying condition that may be causing it.

Alleviate Pain With Tea

For centuries, tea has been used to treat common illnesses including menstrual cramps. Peppermint tea has been noted to have a potent anti muscle constricting properties that is perfect to calm the pain. Brew peppermint tea as instructed and sip this concoction as warm as you can handle. Cramp bark is also been associated to relieve period cramps but these type of tea is hard to acquire as compared to peppermint tea.

Apply Indirect Heat To Ease Pain

During period cramps, the muscles contract frequently causing the unbearable pain. However, to ease the constriction of these muscles, heat may be applied to your abdomen and inner thighs. Place hot water in a water bag and cover it with a towel. Put it on top of your abdomen or place it in between your sore thighs. A warm soak in the tub can also do the trick.

Herbal Remedies Can Lessen The Pain

Plants and herbs have natural medicinal properties that can be utilized when having dysmenorrhea. Ginger decreases the prostaglandins that are the precursors of the pain. The anti-spasmodic  and anti inflammatory properties of cinnamon also helps in reducing the pain during menstruation.

Over The Counter Medication Is An Option

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are usually a convenient method of taking the pain away of dysmenorrhea. However, be mindful on the proper dosage and refrain from over self-medication.

Massage The Pain Away

When muscles contract frequently, the muscles tend to wound too much and this might cause the pain. Massaging the area gently can release the tension inside the muscle bands keeping pain at bay.

Stick A Needle Into It

Traditional acupuncture has been extensively researched and its studies have made it into a well-known alternative medicine practice. Menstrual cramps can be alleviated by applying the necessary pressure on the acupuncture point with a needle. However, it is important to note that only licensed acupuncturists can administer these type of remedies.
