Motivation… an elusive creature. Sometimes it’s your BFF, right there when you need it, taking you places you never thought you could go and then sometimes, all of a sudden, it’s gone! Out of nowhere it walks out on you and you’re left to figure out how to drag yourself to the gym or make another batch of chicken. The coming and going of this creature is frustrating in and of itself, never mind the actual getting fit part. But you can capture it. Even if it escapes for a bit, you’ll know how to track it down, sit on it and make it do what it’s suppose to do… keep you pushing!
The first thing you have to do is be very very clear about your intentions, your reasons for wanting to change. It has to be more than “I want to have a great body”, or “I want to lose weight”, it has to go to the heart of why. You have to tap into your raw emotions and reasons for wanting to make change. Have you always been heavy? Were you teased? Have you never felt good about yourself? Are you tired of not feeling in control? Tired of not feeling confident? Tired of not being happy?
You have to be able to definitively, and clearly state, what you don’t want in your life, what doesn’t work for you, and what you’re not willing to put up with anymore. We are motivated by many things, being happy is one of them, but even more powerful, is the scary idea of staying sad – staying where you are, never having more. It’s a moving force to reject living in a space you’re not happy in. *Often, your strongest motivation doesn’t come from what you want, but from what you DONT want.*
- I don’t want diabetes.
- I don’t want to be bigger this year than I was last year.
- I don’t want to buy new clothes.
- I don’t want to feel tired all the time.
- I don’t want to feel invisible.
- I don’t want to start over.
- I don’t want to worry and think about my health and fitness all the time.
- I don’t want______________.
Once you start moving, adjusting and revamping you’ll actually start to SEE your work. And when you see what your mind manifests, that’s when you truly start to feel your own power and when sweet momentum kicks in! Now, it’s not such a struggle to make the right choices, not such a struggle to hit your workouts, and not such a struggle to start seeing yourself in a positive light. And now, the motivation comes in the form of CONFIDENCE, and confidence is far more rewarding than just “losing weight”. Knowing your power for “change-ablility” proves to yourself you “can”. And if you can do THIS, what more can you do?!
You do have to conjure your motivation to start, but with each new change comes a sense of accomplishment, and with each accomplishment comes strength, and with strength, you reveal your truest you. There isn’t anything more motivating than tapping into your heart.
Sustained motivation comes from achieving “it”, then never wanting to let it go.
